A.  CSH NEWS

1.  Natural Health Products Update

Last April, representatives of the Natural Health Products Directorate (NHPD) met in Ottawa with Carin Roessler (representing the CSH Political Action committee) and, in the Vancouver-area, with Jo Twiss (President) and Christopher Gehry (Vice-President).  At both meetings we expressed concerns about restrictions on importing homeopathic medicines in both liquid and dry form for use by professional homeopaths.  We also offered suggestions regarding the raw materials and compounding policy interpretations that could alleviate these immediate problems.

We are pleased to report that NHPD has announced that the policy has been revised to allow the importation of both liquid medicating potencies and dry medicated pellets by professional homeopaths for use in their practice.

Should any of our professional or student members encounter any difficulty with the importation of homeopathic products (other than those for re-sale), please get in touch with the CSH office at homeopathy@csoh.ca or 604-803-9242 and we will inform NHPD immediately.

For details of the NHPD decision, please refer to the Compounding Policy and Raw Material Policy at their website: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/dhp-mps/prodnatur/legislation/pol/index_e.html

Quote from NHPD:  Natural Health Products (NHP) Raw Material Policy has been revised to clarify that a medicating potency or medicated pellet, when not manufactured, sold or represented for NHP use, is considered a raw material under the Natural Health Products Regulations, as these products do not meet the function component of an NHP, as defined in Schedule 1 of the NHP definition.  Therefore, importation or sale of medicating potencies or medicated pellets, when not manufactured, sold or represented for NHP use, does not require a site or product licence, as site and product licensing requirements do not apply.
